Legacy Augmented Reality Resources

Over the years LGfL has been working closely with the experts at Inspyro (who are now part of Discovery Education) to bring the latest Augmented and Virtual Reality content. The aim was to help support the effective delivery of the curriculum through unique, engaging, interactive and affordable AR/VR experiences.
LGfL has built up an extensive portfolio of online learning resources since 2002. All resources appearing in the portfolio have undergone a rigorous quality assurance process to ensure that they are effective and relevant resources for schools to use. However, in recent years, changes to the national curriculum, online browser technologies and updated operating systems have impacted some of the resources and their suitability for all schools. 
The Award winning Active Worksheets and Apps on this page currently continue to work but this is dependent on what iOS you are running on your Apple device ie they may start to fail or not work at all if you have updated to iOS 12+ (see below for known issues). At LGfL we understand that you may still want to access and use these legacy resources, so have collated them here.

Why have these resources not been updated to work on a modern iOS/browser?

All LGfL resources appearing in the portfolio have undergone a rigorous quality assurance process to ensure that they are effective and relevant resources for schools to use. However, in recent years, changes to online browser technologies and updated operating systems have impacted some of the resources and their suitability for all schools. Were we can we have updated apps but for others like the apps mentioned above the technology that enables them has evolved.
There have been major changes to Apple iOS to move to iPadOS. The way AR is delivered is changing too, with surface tracking (a way of detecting where the floor and walls are) has replaced the detection of trigger / tracker images and QR codes. This has major benefits as it dramatically improves the realism of the AR and means that users can break free of having to keep a tracker image visible at all times. Another major benefit of this is being able to view objects in life size. LGfL and Discovery Education have taken the view that updating the apps to maintain tracker image viewing was not as important as building a future proof new platform which can be used on more modern devices and their enhanced capabilities.  

What is the optimal iOS to run these resources? 

The LGfL / Inspryo legacy AR content was produced some years ago. It is likely that older iPad (up to iOS 12)  that have not been updated may be able to still run certain content titles with fewer issues but this is not guaranteed and will vary across content titles.

Are there alternatives to this resource?

The publishers of the resources Discovery Education have created a new hosting system for many of the Activ lens experiences,  their new “Sandbox” platform is available to all schools freely.

Are there new opportunities with immersive learning resources and LGfL?

Discovery Education chose LGfL as a lead strategic partner to pilot the next generation of immersive learning resources for schools using the latest Augmented Reality technology; LGfL schools were invited to get involved in the pilot via the newsletter. N.B Schools had to have iPads that were 2017 or newer. See also pilot opportunities (for Sandbox AR WW2 pilot opportunity)

We also offer free training using Adobe Aero. Adobe Aero is an augmented reality authoring and publishing tool by Adobe on Creative Cloud. Aero is available for iOS, although there are versions for macOS and Windows which are currently in public beta. 

Why does the *new* Sandbox immersive technology platform only work on iPads?

When developing the new immersive technology platform, the consumption data from the previous generation of augmented reality content was studied to determine which device platform was used. The overwhelming majority of access to the legacy resources was via the iPad platform; therefore the first version of the Sandbox platform was chosen to be on iPad OS in the first instance.
